Childrens Burial Ground (Disused)

Children's burial ground

What is recorded here

Childrens Burial Ground (Disused) in County Galway, Ireland holds small upright stones within a low drystone wall, marking a place where the youngest lives ended before records or praise. Grass and forgetfulness have claimed most of it, but the stones still rise like broken teeth, refusing to disappear. The oratory nearby suggests prayer continued after burial, and the disuse does not diminish the grief that built the wall.
Immediately SW of an oratory (GA081-011001-). A small irregular area, much overgrown, but bounded to S and W by traces of a low drystone wall. Small upright stones are visible in the interior. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Galway Vol. I - West Galway'. Compiled by Paul Gosling (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1993). Date of upload: 05 August 2010
