Childrens Burial Ground

Children's burial ground

What is recorded here

South-facing grassland in County Galway holds a children's burial ground where simple uprights still mark small graves beneath a slight mound. The place belongs to the innocent dead, not adult ceremony, and its narrow shape suggests urgency rather than pride. Children were carried there quickly, perhaps during fever or birth loss, and the living stepped back to leave them alone.
On a S-facing slope in grassland. A slight subrectangular grassy mound (N-S 11m, E-W 9.5m) with a few simple uprights marking the graves. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Galway Vol. II - North Galway'. Compiled by Olive Alcock, Kathy de hÓra and Paul Gosling (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1999). Date of upload: 05 August 2010
