Childrens Burial Ground

Children's burial ground

What is recorded here

Children's Burial Ground is a small mound within a Galway ringfort, marked by a few scattered stones rather than grand monuments. Its modest size suggests it belonged to the youngest members of a forgotten community, perhaps infants or children whose deaths struck the settlement hard. The random placement of its markers resists tidy ceremony, preserving instead the raw urgency of grief when adults had no time for order.
Within a ringfort (GA043-032----). Small subrectangular mound (NW-SE c. 9m, NE-SW c. 6.5m), in fair condition, which is occupied by only a handful of randomly placed set stones indicating grave-markers. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Galway Vol. II - North Galway'. Compiled by Olive Alcock, Kathy de hÓra and Paul Gosling (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1999). Date of upload: 05 August 2010
