Children's burial ground in Garrane East

Children's burial ground

What is recorded here

Ferns and loose stones mark a children's burial ground in Garrane East, County Kerry, where unbaptised babies were laid to rest beside a rath on a slope facing the River Laune and Slieve Mish Mountains. The field still holds that excluded tenderness, giving up its smallest victims to soil instead of church doctrine.
In rough pasture, covered in ferns and occasional loose stones, on the plateau of a N-facing slope, overlooking the River Laune estuary and Slieve Mish Mountains to the N. A rath (KE056-007----) is c. 10m to the E. According to local information, this field contains a burial place for unbaptised babies. Compiled by: Ursula Egan Date of upload: 13 March 2013
