Children's burial ground in Camas Uachtair

Children's burial ground

What is recorded here

Camas Uachtair holds a children's burial ground hidden beneath dense scrub at the northern foot of Cnoc Chamais. Local tradition preserves the site though no marker remains visible. The sea may have taken many children, carrying their bodies out beyond memory while the land kept only a vague shadow of loss.
Close to seashore at N foot of Cnoc Chamais on inner reaches of Cuan Chamais. An ill-defined unenclosed area, now totally overgrown with dense scrub, but held in local tradition to be a CBG (info. T. Robinson). Not visited. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Galway Vol. I - West Galway'. Compiled by Paul Gosling (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1993). Date of upload: 05 August 2010
