What is recorded here

Death came quickly to Ballyfinnane children, crowding the western field until adults stopped naming the victims and called the soil a children's ground instead. A quernstone still sits in Knockaneacoolteen, perhaps pulled from that buried place after the digging stopped. The stone may have marked one child, joined a household threshold, or simply escaped the forgetting that took the rest.

In the 1840s a children's burial ground was recorded in the W end of Ballyfinnane townland (OSNB, Molahiffe, no. 1, 30). Its precise location is not known. According to local information, a quernstone (KE039-146----), now in Knockaneacoolteen townland, is likely to have come from this burial ground.
