Children's burial ground in An Léana Riabhach

Children's burial ground

What is recorded here

An unmarked children's burial ground lies hidden in rough pasture beside the Galway Bay shoreline, west of the Silver Strand. Blowing sands may have swallowed the grave markers, erasing the exact boundary between the living field and the dead. The grass still grows thick above that forgotten loss, forcing anyone who walks the coast to imagine which small bodies rest beneath the soil.
In very rough pastureland sloping to the S and immediately to the N of the rocky shoreline of Galway Bay. According to local folklore, a children's burial ground was located somewhere in a small field/paddock along the shore to the W of the Silver Strand (information from Mr Seamus Hickey 1/11/2017). No grave-markers are visible - they may have been covered over by blowing sands. Not precisely located. Compiled by: Olive Alcock Date of upload: 13 June 2019
