Children's burial ground in An Fhaiche

Children's burial ground

What is recorded here

An Fhaiche held a children's burial ground near the last house of the village, respected enough to keep out of the plough even when no bones remained. That empty mercy suggests the community still imagined small bodies beneath the soil, giving the land a tender danger long after memory faded.
Henry (1937, 276) recorded a calluragh burial ground near the last house of Faha village. It was 'devoid of any remains' but was still respected and left un-ploughed. It is not now remembered locally and its precise location has not been identified. An early ecclesiastical site, with cross-slabs, lies c. 450m to NE of the village (KE034-014003-). The above description is derived from J. Cuppage, ‘Corca Dhuibhne. Dingle Peninsula archaeological survey. Ballyferriter. Oidhreacht Chorca Dhuibhne’ (1986), no. 898. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload: 7 August 2013
