Charles Lever was born in Amiens Street, Dublin, in 1806, and his reckless college years and backwood dangers became the spine of novels that read like overheard conversation. He sang ballads for coins, pretended to be a German student, and fled Native American danger before becoming a doctor whose conduct offended authorities. Those scars and pranks reappeared in Harry Lorrequer and Charles O'Malley, turning his life into stories others could inhabit.
