Charles Arbuthnot, born 14 March 1767 in Rockfleet, County Mayo, Ireland, later became a prominent British diplomat and Tory politician. He served as Ambassador to the Ottoman Empire from 1804 to 1807 and held several political offices, including First Commissioner of Woods and Forests. His second wife, Harriet, became a noted hostess at the Duke of Wellington's society dinners and wrote an important diary cataloging contemporary political intrigues. Arbuthnot died on 18 August 1850 at Apsley House, Piccadilly, London.
