Half a metre wide and two feet high, the cave cuts through the rath like a hidden vein. Stone walls and lintels still hold the roof above a dark passage that runs southeast beneath the mound. People may have crawled through it to hide, pray or simply listen to the earth breathe. The rath keeps its secret, but the cave still gives one back when looked into.

In the NW quadrant of a rath (MA071-054001-). This Man-made underground passage is shown as ‘Cave’ on the NW perimeter of the rath on the 1838 and 1931 OS 6-inch maps. Several small surface openings in the NW part of the rath interior provide glimpses into a subterranean passage. The largest opening (Wth 0.75m; H 0.2m) is towards on the external slope of the rath scarp at NNW, revealing a passage with dry stone walls and lintel roofing, which extends to SSE through the rath interior.
