Cave in Sramore

Cave

What is recorded here

Three human bones were discovered in a cave on Sramore Mountain in 1995. The discovery was described as follows: 'bones were on the floor of a tunnel and squeeze we were attempting in a cave some 15-20 meters in [from the entrance] … The bones were in a small hollow which was too small to enter without digging' (unpublished records, NMI). The remains represent one adult aged over 20 years and possibly male. One bone returned a Late Mesolithic date of 5202± 39BP (UB-6407): it has not proved possible to identify the exact location of this particular cave (pers. comm. Marion Dowd, 2014). (Moore 2003, no. 1495) Compiled by: Paul Walsh Date of upload: 29 April 2014
The Cave in Sramore is a limestone karst formation, typical of the region's geology, formed through the dissolution of soluble rock over millennia. Human bones found in 1995 suggest possible prehistoric activity or burial use, though no further archaeological details or folklore are recorded.

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
