Clear water bypassed the visible chamber and reappeared days later at a distant waterfall, proving the cave was a living arrow rather than a dead hole. That is why people stopped treating it as waste and began listening for the direction of its music. The first chamber was not the end; it was the place where the mountain stopped being proud and admitted it could be read.

In the SE sector of a large early ecclesiastical enclosure (CL017-094001-). Westropp (1915, 272) noted: ‘two holes in the field [near the entrance] mark a Man-made underground passage’, adding ‘I am told that, when it was excavated long since by Col. Marcus Paterson, of Clifden, and Mr. Robert Foster, of Rinroe, it was traced under the ring [of the ecclesiastical enclosure] into the garth, but no antiquities were discovered’. No surface trace was visible when inspected in 1999, the area being overgrown with bushes and with only some loose stones visible.
