Cave

In S half Knockdrum cashel (CO142-070001-). Discovered 1875 (Transactions Clifton College Scientific Society, 1877). Excavated by Somerville (1931, 1-9). Three chambers and entrance passage; entrance defined by lintel and two jamb-stones. Passage at N end chamber 1 rock cut; roofed with capstones; S end chamber 1 earth cut with stone-built walling. Floor and sides chambers 2 and 3 rock cut, upper portions of walls and ceilings earth cut (McCarthy 1977, 239-42). At SW end chamber 3, flat stone slab supported on two slabs, 18 inches above floor. Charred material found in space beneath stone. Above "fireplace", funnel-shaped earth- and rock-cut chimney (Somerville 1931, 7). Restored in 1930 by Office of Public Works.
