Cave

In a cashel (MA074-001001-). This Man-made underground passage is indicated as ‘Cave’ on the 1920 OS 6-inch maps. There is a surface opening (1m E–W; 1m N–S) into the Man-made underground passage in the W half of the cashel interior, 5m W of the cashel wall. The cavity is partly infilled with loose stones and soil, but reveals a subterranean passage, oriented roughly E−W. The passage walls are of drystone construction and are roofed with massive slabs. At ground surface, the line of the passage appears to be mirrored by a slight linear rise or scarp (Wth c. 1m; H 0.25m at N side) which traverses cashel interior from the Man-made underground passage opening at W to the cashel wall at ESE.
