Causeway in Luimnagh West

On the N shore of Lough Corrib. This artificial causeway (L 70-75m; Wth 3m; H 0.3m) is constructed of a mix of angular limestone boulders, those along the well-defined edges are larger. It runs in a SW direction out into the shallow rock-strewn lakeshore. On inspection, it was fully exposed but in winter it is submerged. Its date and function are unclear. According to local information, this area was exploited for limestone for fertilizer in the 19th century. It is also held that stones drawn from here were used to build St Mary's Cathedral in Tuam.
