Catherine McAuley

Catherine McAuley turned a inherited fortune into a Dublin house where compassate women could catch destitute children and abandoned mothers before the streets swallowed them. She opened that door in 1827 with two companions, not to build a church or claim glory, but to keep fragile human lives warm, fed, and taught. The Sisters of Mercy grew from that practical compassion, carrying her into schools and sickrooms across Ireland because mercy proved more useful than pride.
