Castletown Airfield operated from May 1940 through April 1944 as a satellite to Wick, helping defend Scapa Flow and Northern Scotland during the second World War. It contained several dispersal bays, a bomb store, possible blast pens, and a heavy AA battery armed with two 3 inch guns under code C2. A salvaged 4.7 inch naval gun once stood mounted in concrete outside station HQ before the Navy retrieved it. Today overgrown concrete and remaining huts mark the site, while the former decontamination centre holds cow manure and the Bellman and T3 hangars have been dismantled.
