Castlesteads is a Roman fort on Hadrian's Wall, built to watch the Cambeck Valley and guard a crossing place. It stood square and strong on a high bluff, with soldiers, horses and ordinary life inside its walls. In 1791 the garden of Castlesteads House was laid over it, and the fort disappeared under soil and roots. Now the land holds what the world stopped seeing, keeping its shape beneath the wood.
