Castlelaw Hill holds a prehistoric ring ditch house where a circular cut marked the boundary between domestic life and open landscape. People may have stood at its edge to watch weather, herds or travellers cross Midlothian. The ditch still shapes the ground, preserving the decision made when someone first drew that circle in soil.

Scotland's National Record of the Historic Environment records Castlelaw Hill as Ring Ditch House (prehistoric). The official map says its point is accurate as follows: NGR given to the nearest 1m. The record does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.
