Castlelaw and Dreghorn Training Area is a military firing range in Midlothian where first world war and twentieth century troops drilled beside older fort remains. Gunfire and manoeuvre turned the land into a rehearsal for violence, while the hill held earlier human marks beneath the noise. The clash of ages gives the place its edge: modern weapons practice laid over ancient settlement, both still embedded in the same ground.
