Castlecary

Plant Remains (period Unassigned)

What is recorded here

Castlecary is a layered military checkpoint where Roman roads, Iron Age hills and medieval power collided along the Red Burn. The name may preserve the old fort rather than the later castle, suggesting that humans have kept returning to this narrow valley because it controls movement itself. Even the ground remembers the traffic of armies, traders and riders forced through one tight gap.
Scotland's National Record of the Historic Environment records Castlecary as Plant Remains (period Unassigned). The official map says its point is accurate as follows: NGR given to the nearest 100m. The record does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.

The historic-place record does not grant public access. Check current conditions and ownership before entering land or a building.
