Castlecary, Culvert, Forth and Clyde Canal is a buried water passage beneath Falkirk, built to carry the canal across land that refused to stay flat. The exact year is lost, but the function is plain: when rain filled the ditch or a bridge threatened to collapse, the culvert swallowed the flood and gave the canal back its steady line. That is the whole trick, a hole in the ground that saved a regional artery.
