Castlebane Fort

Internal diam. c. 19m. A subcircular area enclosed by a much overgrown and partially destroyed stone wall. Small sections of the internal and external facing of the wall can be traced demonstrating its thickness to have been between 2m and 3m. Field boundaries abut onto and cross the site. On the N side a boulder which forms part of the wall is decorated with 7 cupmarks (DG053-015001-). Kinahan (1885-86, 427) referred to a chamber and door-way in the N wall but no trace of either was found on this occasion. The interior is level. The site is located S of the crest of a low hill in good farmland but with a lot of scrub and woods. The above description was derived from the 'Archaeological Survey of County Donegal.
