Castle

Castle, unclassified

What is recorded here

Castle is one of two castles owned by Robert Ryce in a 1584 survey, yet it has no known location. It may be buried under Tralee, hidden behind a wall or lost entirely. Robert Ryce could have lived there, traded there or simply claimed it for power. The castle still resists identification, which is the strangest part.
This record refers to the castle listed in a survey of 1584 as one of two castles belonging to Robert Ryce (the other being possibly Short Castle (KE029-119026-)). Its precise location is not known. The above description is derived from Bradley, J., et al. 1987 Urban Archaeology Survey Part XIV County Kerry. Unpublished report. Office of Public Works. Date of upload: 24 January 2012
Built by Robert Ryce in the late 16th century, this unclassified castle in Tralee is remembered primarily from a 1584 survey, highlighting Ryce's local influence during the English colonial administration in Ireland.

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
