Castle

Castle, unclassified

What is recorded here

Castle, unclassified in Sallystown, County Wexford, Ireland. Tradition claims Devereux built it there. No castle appears in the 17th-century description of the townland. The gap between memory and evidence is the interesting part.
There is a tradition that there was a castle at what is now the townland of Sallystown that was thought to have been built by the Devereux family (Jeffrey 1979). In the 17th century this townland is described on the Down Survey map (1655-58) in NLI (ms 725, microfilm P 7384, N 6380) of Kildavin parish as Gragenehowne, but there is no record of a castle or other structure.
