Castle

Castle, unclassified

What is recorded here

Castle is an unclassified castle in Rossdarragh, County Laois, Ireland. It is no longer visible on the surface, but a 1654-7 Down Survey Map shows a ruined castle and some cabins there. The lost building may have stood inside the large stone-walled enclosure still marked near the place.
Reference to a building here, possibly a castle, (Carrigan 1905,vol. 2, 281). No visible surface remains. Described by Carrigan as 'On the Ordnance Map the site of this church is marked "Site of R. C. Chapel" (LA034-017----). Two or three hundred yards to the west, there is a large enclosure (LA034-016002-) surrounded by a stone wall, which was probably the site of some old building, perhaps a castle' (Carrigan 1905, vol. 2, 281). 1654-7 Down Survey Map shows a ruined castle and some cabins (NLI, MS 720). The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Laois' (Dublin Stationery Office, 1995) compiled by P. David Sweetman, Olive Alcock and Bernie Moran. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload: 17 December 2007
