What is recorded here
Rathure North and Rathure South hold a castle nobody can locate. Cooke wrote it down in 1875, but the ground has kept the address secret ever since. The missing castle is not a failure of memory; it is a trap for arrogance. Men who stop pretending they understand everything are the ones who find it.
Unlocated castle within the townland of Rathure North and South (Cooke 1875, 182).
The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Offaly' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
