Strafford's 1635 inquisition named a castle in Newtowne, yet no stone remains there today. Cloghans Castle stands instead in the adjoining townland, a tall shadow where the list may have pointed or erred. The missing structure could be a mistaken boundary, a demolished keeper's post, or a name stretched across fields until it touched real brick.

The Strafford Inquisition of Co. Mayo, an inquiry into landownership undertaken in 1635, lists a castle in ‘Newtowne’ (O'Sullivan 1958, 155). There is no evidence now of a castle in that townland, but there is a tower house, Cloghans Castle (MA039-088----) in the adjoining townland to S.
