Castleknock stands in low-lying Galway pastureland, holding no visible walls but preserving the memory of a small Gaelic castle and underground passage. Holt described ancient foundations and a dark tunnel in 1912, yet later inspection found only grass and silence. The land may still hide that forgotten chamber beneath its surface, waiting for rain or curiosity to reveal what human hands once built.

In low-lying pastureland. Holt (1912, 243, no. 54) referred to a hillock known as ‘Castleknock’ on the old road from Clarinbridge to the west and stated that it showed ‘evident traces of ancient foundations’ that seemed ‘to represent a small castle, bawn and bailey built on the site of a Gaelic work’; he also noted an ope which exposed a ‘Man-made underground passage’. He supposed that the castle, of which no record existed, stood on the road with its bawn extending to the S and the small bailey to the W (ibid.).
