Castle

Castle, unclassified

What is recorded here

Knockavegan Castle is unclassified because no visible ruin or marked site has been found. It may still lie buried under grass, hidden in a field hedge, or absorbed into another house. What is known is that a castle and fields belonged to the place before they disappeared from common memory.
A land grant to William Mc Brian Murtagh in 1619 included ‘the castle and fields of Knockivagan’ (Cal. pat. rolls Ire., Jas I, 450). The precise location of the castle has not been identified and it is possible that Ballyknock Castle (LF018-060001-) in the adjoining townland to the S may be it. A land grant in 1619 records William Mc Brian Murtagh holding Knockavegan castle, though its exact location remains unidentified; it is remembered primarily through early modern land transactions in Ireland.

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
