What is recorded here
Kilcornan is an unclassified castle recorded in 1640, not a invented landmark or a hidden museum. It may still be the old castle mentioned beside wast cabbins, perhaps within the ringfort or lost elsewhere in the townland. The uncertainty is the shape of the place: a castle that refused to be found, leaving behind only the possibility that it watched the land from somewhere no one can now point to.
The Civil Survey description of the lands of Kilcornan in 1640 describes an 'old castle irrepairable & some cabbins wast' (Simington 1934, vol. 2, 364). It is possible that this reference is referring to the buildings within the ringfort (TS058-041001-), however this could also be a reference to an unlocated castle within the townland of Kilcornan.
