What is recorded here

Castle in Hortland, County Kildare, disappeared before modern mapping, leaving only a moat and a changed place name. It belonged to the Fitzgeralds, then passed to Mr. Hort, and vanished entirely from the landscape. What remains is a gap where a building should stand, inviting imagination to fill the shape of what was lost.

The OSL (Herity 2002, 30) recorded that, ' … there was an old castle (beside the moat (KD004-017----)) which formerly belonged to the Fitzgeralds, but which they sold to Mr. Hort. None of it remains at present.' The castle is not recorded on Taylor's 1783 map of County Kildare, or on the OS 6-inch map ed.'s, and has not been located. The castle in Hortland was originally held by the Fitzgerald family before being sold to Mr. Hort, though the exact date of the sale is unclear; it is remembered for its historical association with the prominent Fitzgerald lineage in the region.
