Castle

Castle, unclassified

What is recorded here

Grange holds two possible townlands and one missing castle, doubling the mystery rather than solving it. Walter boy may have stood inside walls now buried under grass, while others walked past the same name unaware they touched his lost world. The castle does not need to reappear; it needs to be remembered as absent. Forgetting is not the same as understanding.
Nolan (1901, 119) records that a castle in Grange townland, in the barony of Clare, was in the possession of 'Walter boy' in 1574. Not located. See also GA056-148---- as there are two Grange townlands in the barony. Compiled by: Olive Alcock Date of upload: 14 February 2017
Walter Boy held a castle in Grange townland, barony of Clare, in 1574; its exact location remains unidentified. It is noted in historical records as part of the English colonial presence in the region during the late 16th century.

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
