Garranroe Castle vanished before records arrived, leaving only a ruin and an orchard in the hands of Major General Patricke Purcell during the 1654-56 Civil Survey. The precise stones remain hidden in County Limerick, denying modern eyes the chance to measure its rooms or read its walls. What is lost may have been a private retreat, a defensive post or a household center, but the absence itself becomes the shape of the place.

The precise location of a castle in the townland of Garranroe has not been identified. Westropp (1906-7, 165) recorded the following details about Garranroe Castle; 'Garran Roo, ruinous C[astle]. in Crome, late Major-Gen. P. Purcell (C.S., xxiv., p. 30)'. The 1654-56 Civil Survey of Limerick recorded that Major General Patricke Purcell, an Irish Papist, was the owner of Garranroe which contained 'a ruinous castle & an orchard' (Simington 1938, 140).
