Castle

Castle, unclassified

What is recorded here

Cloghnyerla, the castle of Hugh MacJonyn, still stands unclassified in Frenchbrook North and Frenchbrook South. Hugh may have watched the water from its stones or simply owned the land when boundaries mattered more than comfort. The name resists modern judgment, preserving a local relationship instead of forcing a national label.
Known as 'Cloghnyerla', castle of Hugh MacJonyn (Knox 1908, 347). The above description has been derived from D. Lavelle (compiler), An Archaeological Survey of Ballinrobe and District including Lough Mask and Lough Carra. Lough Mask and Lough Carra Tourist Development Association (1994), No. 692. Date of upload: 16 January 2015
Hugh MacJonyn is associated with Cloghnyerla, a castle in Frenchbrook, as noted in historical records. Its importance lies in its mention in early 20th-century archaeological surveys, linking it to local medieval history.

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
