Henry (1987, 23) writing in 1739 recorded a redoubt at Ballyconnell, the location of which has been tentatively identified with that of the Church of Ireland chapel in the village (Davies 1948a, 96). The present church (erected c. 1800) is situated on a mound (diam c. 36.5m) which Davies (ibid.) suggested was artificial. He described it as being quite steep at N and W (H 3.9m) where the ground falls away to a stream. He noted a slight re-entrant at SW and claimed that a fosse was traceable as far as E wall of graveyard. However, his interpretation of the mound as artificial is questionable as there are a number of natural mounds of similar appearance in the immediate locality.
