Castle

Castle, unclassified

What is recorded here

One cairn still stands on Rabbit Island in Lough Bofin. It may be all that remains of the castle Mac Raghnal once kept there, while maps still call the same island Abbot Island. The water has taken the rest, leaving only a small stone heap and a name that will not sit still.
In the centre of Lough Bofin in the River Shannon. Mac Raghnal reputedly had a castle at Innismurrin (McGivney 1932). Innismurrin is now thought to be Rabbit Island, but it is labelled as Abbot Island on Navigation maps (Blaney 1944, 124). Any castle remains unlocated, unless the cairn (LE035-029----) is the last remnants of it. Compiled by: Michael Moore Date of upload: 6 January 2020
