Castle

Castle, unclassified

What is recorded here

Dawson Grove Demesne hides a castle never properly classified, perhaps belonging to McMahon because local memory still whispers that name. The ground may have swallowed walls, rooms or towers while people forgot which stone answered which command. What is missing is not nothing; it is a castle waiting to be recognised by the shape of the hole it left behind.
Local traditions refer to a 'McMahon Castle' in the townland of Dawson Grove Demesne, but cannot be confirmed. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Monaghan' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1986). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload 17 July 2007

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
