Castle, unclassified in Coolaghmore, County Kilkenny, Ireland. Indicated on the Down Survey barony map of Kells as being SE of the church (KK030-004001-) (Hibernia Regnum, courtesy of Trinity College Dublin). In 1580/81 an indenture between Thomas Butler, Earl of Ormond and ‘Nicholas Quemerford of Mogorban’, Co. Tipperary, grants, ‘the town commonly called Colaghmore, Co. Kilkenny, with the castle, meases, etc., belonging to the same, to have and
Indicated on the Down Survey barony map of Kells as being SE of the church (KK030-004001-) (Hibernia Regnum, courtesy of Trinity College Dublin). In 1580/81 an indenture between Thomas Butler, Earl of Ormond and ‘Nicholas Quemerford of Mogorban’, Co. Tipperary, grants, ‘the town commonly called Colaghmore, Co. Kilkenny, with the castle, meases, etc., belonging to the same, to have and hold to said Nicholas, etc., as Patrick Sherlok held the same, for 21 years at annual rent of 20l [pounds]’ (Curtis 1941, vol. 5, 307-08, deed 335). The castle is a separate building to the residential tower (KK030-004002-) at the W end of the former medieval church. The precise location of the castle within Coolaghmore townland is unknown.
