According to Adams (1881, 493) a castle stood near the present house called 'Castlemoate'. Tradition states that it also stood near a rath, which was destroyed by an Irish garrison to prevent being occupied by the English. In 1873 when it was levelled, four shillings, an Irish Halfpenny of William and Mary and a defaced 17th century token were found along with a narrow paved road.
