Castle

Formerly erroneous located in Cellarstown West townland. Though not depicted on either the Down Survey (1655-6) barony map of ‘The Liberties of the Citty of Kilkenny’ or the parish map of St John's, the terrier accompanying the parish map mentions that, ''In Lowcellarstown are many Cabbins and an old Fortification' (Hibernia Regnum, courtesy of Trinity College Dublin). The proprietors in 1640 are listed as, 'James Lanton Fitz [and] Nichols & Rich[ard] Parcell' (ibid.). The 17th-century townland of Lowcellarstown appears to equate with the modern townlands of Cellarstown East and Cellarstown Upper. The 'cabbins' or small houses (KK020-080001-) are located in the lower portion of the 17th-century townland on the barony map which equates with Cellarstown Upper townland. However, as the 'old Fortification' is not depicted it could be in either of the two modern townlands. The fortification is most likely an old castle.
