Castle

Castle, unclassified

What is recorded here

Castle appeared on the Down Survey in 1655-6, yet it vanished from later official maps while a large gabled house remained near Bishopscourt House. The loss of its name did not erase the building, but it removed the castle from public memory. A chamber may still hold its shape beneath a newer roof, waiting for someone to stop calling it ordinary.
Named 'Castle' on the Down Survey (1655-6), while Noble and Keenan show a large, gabled house in this area on their 1752 map of County Kildare. Not recorded on any edition of the OS 6-inch map, but appears to have been located in the vicinity of 'Bishopscourt House'. Compiled by: Gearóid Conroy Date of upload: 10 June 2011
