What is recorded here
Benmore castle stood in Athenry barony when Olyveros Roe held it in 1574, but no one has marked its stones since. It escapes every attempt to picture it, not through any magic, but through the ordinary failure of distance and forgotten witness. A castle can exist in a list and still refuse the mind.
Amongst the entries in the list of Galway castles of 1574 is 'Benmore', in the barony of Athenry, then in the possession of 'Olyveros Roe' (Nolan 1901, 121). Not located.
