Barrettstown still carries the name Páirc an chaisleáin, a castle field, though no wall, gate or room remains visible to mark the claim. The townland itself becomes the proof: a field named for a castle that vanished so completely it stopped being a castle and became a verb for remembering. Whatever stood there was lost before writing arrived, which is why the name does more work than marble ever could.

In O'Kelly's (1969, 169) description of the placenames of Barrettstown townland he mentions, 'Páirc an chaisleáin (a castle site here according to Carrigan's Notes)'. The precise location of this castle within the townland is unknown. Compiled by: Jean Farrelly Date of upload: 18 April 2023
