Ballyragget Castle disappeared before the current tower house rose, leaving no trace except a ghost in the story. It may have stood beside the newer structure or vanished entirely, but the gap suggests the town once wore two layers of defence. The missing castle does not need to be found; it needs to be remembered as the reason the present tower exists.

According to Lyng (1946-47, 14) a 13th/14th-century castle was present in Ballyragget before the existing late 15th/16th-century tower house (KK010-001001-) was built and was possibly located in the vicinity of the latter.
