Ballymagooly Castle vanished from the cliff edge above the Blackwater River valley, leaving no visible trace except a house named The Garrison and faint foundation stones. English soldiers garrisoned the place during the Williamite wars, while Roche lords held its lands before James Cotter bought it in 1682. The castle resisted every drawing and survey, appearing on old maps but refusing to show itself in the grass. It is the kind of fort that stops being a building and becomes a warning about memory itself.

On edge of cliff, overlooking Blackwater River valley to N. No visible surface trace of Ballymagooly Castle, which is said to have stood near a house named 'The Garrison' on 1935 OS 6-inch map (Grove White 1905-25, vol. 1, 256). Of latter only traces of foundations now survive. Castle depicted here on Jobson's map (c. 1589) and on Down Survey (1655-6) barony map 1654-59). Regrant of lands to David Lord Roche in 1611 included '...the castle, town and lands of Ballimullgwoly...'. (ibid., 256). Sold by Theobald Roche to James Cotter in 1682 (Healy 1988, 304). Castle garrisoned by English during Williamite wars (Smith 1750, 340). Part of castle wall stood in 1904 (Grove White ibid.).
