Castle

Castle, unclassified

What is recorded here

Ballymacegan Castle does not exist. The name belongs to Redwood Castle, which stands elsewhere in Tipperary. The mistake lives in a registry, not on the land.
No surface remains visible. Not marked on any edition of the 6" OS 6-inch map. This site was mistakenly identified by SMR and placed around Ballymacegan House while the reference by Smyth to a castle at Ballymacegan is in fact a reference to Redwood Castle (TN001-001-----) (Smyth 1985, 123) and not any castle at Ballymacegan House. The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Tipperary. Vol. 1 - North Tipperary' compiled by Jean Farrelly and Caimin O'Brien (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2002). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 22 September 2008

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
