Castle

Castle, unclassified

What is recorded here

Colonel O'Toole's Castle vanished from Ballycullen when men levelled its last walls within a decade of O'Flanagan's visit. Only broken gateway pillars remained for locals to point at, stripping the place from sight but not from memory. The castle did not collapse gradually; it was erased by choice, leaving behind a hole in the landscape that still resists explanation.
Unlocated castle within the townland. According to the OSL, (O'Flanagan 1928, 85-6), 'In the Townland of Ballycullen they shew (sic) the broken pillars of a gateway which led to a Castle called Colonel O'Toole's Castle, of which nothing can now be seen … , the last portions of its walls having been levelled within the last ten years'. Date of upload: 19 October 2012
Built by or associated with Colonel O'Toole, this castle is remembered locally as a historical landmark within the townland of Ballycullen, though its exact location and date of construction remain unclear.
