What is recorded here
No amount of digging will bring that castle back, because no one has marked the spot where it stood. It may still lie buried under grass or hidden beneath a farmyard, waiting for a hand sharp enough to find the edge of its stones.
The precise location of a castle in the townland of Ballincolly has not been identified. Westropp (1906-7, 172) recorded the following details about Ballincolly; '1583 ffoxes land, BallinCowlyRwo, alias Ballincollin (Des. R., 3). Ballyncollyroo C[astle]. in Knockesawno (Peyton, p. 13). 1590 Phil. Nash held C[astle]. (Inq. Exch., 54). 1655 Lord Broghill held Ballincolloruo in Effin; sold to Earl of Orrery (B.D., p. 69; D.S.A., 42). 1666 Confirmed to Capt. A. Ormsby (Act Sett.)'.
A tower house type castle is depicted in 'Ballincolloruo' on the 1654-6 Down Survey map of Coshma Barony (Hib. reg.).
